The Christmas holidays offer a plethora of activities much better than scanning the updates: discovering surprises, feasting on holiday treats, and employing meditation skills to avoid arguing with family members. It is wished you were able to enjoy all these things and more. Nevertheless, the showbiz industry doesn't take a break, and this is particularly true for the realm of anime. Many noteworthy news items emerged during the festive period, and should you overlooked some of them, here is a compilation of the juiciest bits.
Perhaps the biggest revelation, the notorious controversial season that was the third season of One-Punch Man proved insufficient to deter the series' continuation. The show will return with a follow-up batch of episodes in 2027—so far away they easily could have called it season 4. Adding to the surprise, animation studio J.C. Staff will remain in charge. On a positive note this time, helmer Shinpei Nagai is attached to direct from the outset, which is seen as a good sign. Yet, the promotional image for the continuation is identical to the one used for season 3, just with characters Saitama and Garou oriented differently. This makes me think that, nowadays, they are probably teasing the fans.
Kyoto Animation has forged a reputation for being an elite animation studio, making its mark not just for the exceptional quality of its output but for the ethical practices of its employees—a uncommon practice in the industry. Curiously, until now, it had not produced an anime stemming from a manga from Shonen Jump, arguably the most famous magazine in the business. Ruri Dragon will change that, and what a superb choice it is. The manga by Masaoki Shindo achieved a huge following when it launched in 2022 after just a few chapters, but then went into a two-year hiatus due to the mangaka's health issues. When it resumed publication with a reduced workload, the series showed it hadn't lost the fans' support and goodwill, and now everyone is ecstatic about the upcoming KyoAni adaptation.
Kingdom is the best-selling, epic Shueisha manga that is other than One Piece. If you've haven't come across it before, it's because it only recently got an English release, but the anime has been running for years, and its sixth season was a further outstanding entry. Apparently that was just the first cour, because a "sequel" has been revealed as in development, and it will very likely premiere in 2026.
Another studio famous for the superior craftsmanship of its productions, Science Saru has given us critically acclaimed works of the ilk of Space Dandy, Devilman Crybaby, and, most recently, Dandadan. This time, the studio will be producing the adaptation of Tomato Soup's manga A Witch's Life in Mongol, inspired by the actual historical person of Fatima, an powerful woman and thinker in the Mongol Empire in the 13th century. From the trailer, the anime named Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia will have a distinctly fresh and fascinating visual style, which is somewhat reminiscent of Ranking of Kings. Scheduled to launch in July 2026, this one will without a doubt be on my must-watch list.
Right after the release of episode 24, it was announced that Tougen Anki will be securing a sequel. Inspired by the Japanese legend of Momotaro, Tougen Anki is based on the manga by Yura Urushibara. The second season of the anime will adapt the Nikko Kegon Falls Arc, but a concrete premiere date has not been disclosed yet.
