Arsenal Football Club has confirmed that its disputed sponsorship partnership with Visit Rwanda will terminate in June this upcoming year.
The arrangement, reportedly valued at around £10m per year, was first established and has since been heavily criticized.
Such scrutiny arises from Rwanda's alleged support for the M23 militia in persistent fighting in the eastern areas of the adjacent DRC.
Earlier this year, Arsenal was criticized for committing a disrespectful act to the government of the DRC by declining to meet with Congolese diplomat Thérèse Wagner to talk about the deal.
Visit Rwanda functions as a branch of the Rwanda's development authority, which is a state institution.
Many speculate that Arsenal committed to and continued this partnership primarily to expand their following across the continent.
Nevertheless, the partnership has now terminated after both parties “jointly decided” to end their collaboration.
“Collaboratively, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have exceeded the original goals of the partnership – supporting environmental protection and eco-friendly travel, motivating countless fans to discover the country, and establishing a durable base for tourism growth,” stated an club announcement.
The statement continued that the partnership has also assisted Rwanda's ambition to become an worldwide athletic destination in Africa and welcome more worldwide tournaments while delivering local football projects that have helped hundreds of young players and coaches enhance their abilities and promote increased engagement in sport across the country.
Richard Garlick, Arsenal's top executive, characterized the deal as a “significant journey” and stated it had been “propelling” the club's goals.
However, this perspective was not shared by a section of Arsenal's fanbase, with the protest movement Arsenal Peace Advocates holding rallies outside the North London venue during the initial Champions League semi-final match against PSG in April's conclusion.
Activists unveiled a sign stating “Terminate the Visit Rwanda Partnership” and distributed armbands to hide the Rwanda branding on uniforms.
During that period, PSG renewed their partnership deal with Visit Rwanda through 2028.
At the same time, Atlético Madrid inked a recent contract for the same period that has led to the branding featured on the La Liga side's male and female kits.
