The co-founders behind the famous ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has stated that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate prevented the launch of a new pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, that co-founded the business with Jerry Greenfield, announced how he plans to personally create the controversial flavor as part of a personal series showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's has been barred from speaking out about.
This latest announcement escalates the continuing disagreement between the world-famous ice cream maker and its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods giant that has owned the ice cream brand for over two decades.
The co-founders have claimed how the parent company and its ice cream arm the Magnum brand improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's from "maintaining its activist principles".
The entrepreneur announced via an Instagram video that he's developing an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, asking for consumer ideas for the product's name and additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen declared from his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”
This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol of support for the Palestinian people due to its coloration, that closely resemble the colors in the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell its products in areas under Israeli control, leading to the parent company selling the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in disputed territories.
The new dessert series is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand that originally established several years back to support former political contender Bernie Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Mr. Cohen revealed how he will create other ice cream flavors focusing on issues that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly by corporate restrictions.
The announcement follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield stepped down from the company in September, following decades with the organization, mentioning concerns regarding how its independence was compromised after Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.
Previously, Ben Cohen remarked that "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."
“My conscience leads me to keep working inside the company to fight for corporate autonomy ensuring that it can actualise its ethical purpose, the principles which established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he explained to media outlets.
