The President stated on Wednesday evening that he had endorsed the bill overwhelmingly passed by American lawmakers that directs the justice department to release more records regarding Jeffrey Epstein, the dead pedophile.
This action comes after an extended period of opposition from the president and his political allies in the legislature that divided his political supporters and created rifts with various established backers.
Trump had fought against releasing the Epstein documents, labeling the situation a "false narrative" and condemning those who wanted to make the files available, notwithstanding vowing their publication on the election circuit.
Nevertheless he changed direction in recent days after it become clear the House would pass the bill. The president stated: "Everything is transparent".
The specifics remain uncertain what the justice department will release in as a result of the bill – the measure details a host of potential items that need to be disclosed, but provides exceptions for some materials.
The bill requires the top justice official to make unclassified related files publicly available "in a searchable and downloadable format", covering all investigations into Jeffrey Epstein, his colleague Maxwell, aircraft records and travel records, individuals mentioned or identified in connection with his crimes, organizations that were linked to his human trafficking or financial networks, protection agreements and additional legal settlements, internal communications about charging decisions, evidence of his detention and demise, and details about possible record elimination.
The justice department will have one month to turn over the documents. The measure contains specific exclusions, encompassing deletions of confidential victim data or private records, any descriptions of youth molestation, publications that would endanger ongoing inquiries or legal cases and depictions of death or abuse.
