Far-Right Former Lawmaker José Antonio Kast Elected as Chile's New President.

After a definitive second-round vote, hardline figure José Antonio Kast has clinched the presidential office in Chile.

A Resounding Triumph

With more than 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast won 58.17% of the ballots, defeating leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.

This signifies Kast's third bid for the presidency, having earlier been lost by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.

Agenda Centered On Law and Order and Migration

Known for his strong socially conservative views and praise for the period of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was mostly centered on promises to tackle increasing violence and significantly curb migration.

He repeatedly blamed migrants, especially the roughly 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for security issues. During the race, he gave an ultimatum for them to exit before the inauguration or face removal.

His policy ideas featured Trump-inspired measures such as erecting holding facilities, border walls, perimeter fencing, and increasing the armed forces presence on the northernmost border.

Within a Regional Trend

Many commentators view Kast's win as aligning with a larger conservative wave in Latin America, similar to this year's political outcomes in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

Yet, other analysts also view it as a extension of the regular swing of power between left and right administrations since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.

Governing Without a Clear Majority

Despite his clear popular vote triumph, Kast is not expected to hold an absolute majority in the legislature, neither in the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate, even when various rightwing parties are grouped together.

This political reality might challenge his policy goals, including a pledge to reduce public spending by $6 billion within a year and a half—a proposal for which he has yet to provided a clear explanation.

"There are numerous things about what a Kast government will look like that we don't know because he has not detailed how he will implement them," commented a political science expert.

The expert continued, "On fiscal matters, it is highly probable we will see austerity policies typical of the right. However where there is much less ambiguity is on public safety, because that has been his central theme throughout the race."
