We are checking images and video shared this morning that show the scene of a alleged car bomb blast that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he succumbed of his injuries. A probe is under way.

The initial step to check the location from which the pictures were from was based on social media reports indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow colour of a nearby apartment building captured in the video.

Identifying additional structures, streetlights and the street layout verified where the pictures were captured.

Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
