The England midfielder Must Eliminate the Petulance to Reclaim a Key Place Under Tuchel.

For Bellingham to aims to fight his way once again into England’s best team, the smart move to cut out the nonsense. The way he reacted upon realizing that he was going up following a night of inconsistency in the match against Albania was unacceptable.

"I don’t want to blow it out of proportion but I stick to my words 'behaviour is key' and respect towards the players who substitute on," commented the coach. "Substitutions happen and you need to comply when you're on the field."

The midfielder must understand. There was no call for an outburst. Harry Kane had only moments earlier made it England leading by two in an inconsequential qualifier, with only six minutes remaining and Bellingham, after a below-par performance, was just shown a yellow for fouling Armando Broja. This could scarcely be called a questionable change. Actually it would have been unwise for Tuchel to not substitute him because there was a chance the midfielder would rule himself out of the opening game of the tournament by receiving a second caution.

Shifting Focus on Himself

Yet Bellingham made himself the center of attention. There was no disguising the young midfielder's disappointment upon understanding that he was going to make way for a teammate. He flung his arms in the air and while he shook Tuchel’s hand after making his way to the sideline it was obvious that the manager was not impressed.

This represents the hurdle that Bellingham must overcome. He congratulated Marcus Rashford for providing the assist for Harry Kane to score his second of the night, but the rest was harmful to his cause. It's not like complaining was going to reverse the substitution. The coach has talked so much about following squad protocols and the necessity of showing proper conduct.

Under Scrutiny

Bellingham, not included in the previous squad, has been under scrutiny since coming back to the squad in the current camp. In effect he was being assessed and he hasn't helped his case with his response to being taken off as England rounded off a flawless qualification run by overcoming a tough opposition from the Albanian team.

The Coach's Plan

This implies it's unclear on whether the squad perform optimally with Bellingham in the team. The evidence here was not definitive. Some new ideas were tested from Tuchel early on. He has given the squad structure and clarity over the past few matches, building with a No 6, a box-to-box player, a No 10 and dedicated wide players, but it felt different versus Albania. The young defender was made his England debut, Wharton was in the starting lineup internationally and the use of John Stones as an auxiliary midfielder created a passing resemblance to Manchester City’s 2023 treble winners.

A Game of Two Halves

Bellingham had ups and downs. He created an opportunity for Eberechi Eze after the break but at times seemed trying too hard. There were a lot of hurried and errant passes. A pointless clash against an opponent at the beginning. England's play was messy for much of the second half. An opportunity for Albania resulted from he lost the ball cheaply. The yellow card was shown after an opponent took the ball by Broja and fouled the attacker.

Depth Makes the Difference

Finally England’s depth proved crucial. The coach brought on the Manchester City player, who looked more naturally fitted to the role that Bellingham had played in the opening period, and Bukayo Saka. Later Saka delivered a corner kick for Kane to open the scoring. It was a reminder that corners and free-kicks will play a key role at the World Cup.

Relationship Not Broken

Nevertheless, the focus was on Bellingham. The excellence of Rashford's cross for the second goal was a little lost amid the drama of the substitution incident. At the end, everyone was watching the midfielder. The coach approached to his side and directed Bellingham to acknowledge the travelling England fans. Their relationship remains intact. Tuchel hasn't decided to abandon the player just yet. However, whether the coach is prepared to offer him a starring role remains in doubt.
