The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Horror Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Gameplay

The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several fascinating future games, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.

"This is a distinctive experience where a girl harboring several personalities inside her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Inside her exist four distinct personas, all possessing unique anxieties and motivations. These souls can seize control at will, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.

Based on showcased footage, much of the action takes place within a creepy hospital, though additional clips show the main character exploring a abandoned church.

A World of Personal Horror

"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to others can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that concept — fears that are specific to every individual."

The central mechanic revolves around controlling whichever soul surfaces at any given moment. However, these souls will change against your will during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's fears become amplified and assault the protagonist one after another. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Choice

At first glance, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with nurses who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the lobby have enormous flowers growing from their necks should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."

After a player believes a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, because each soul can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The last one standing could be a fraud. In any case, your choices are final."

UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
