In October of last year, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the channel introduced a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. During a period often marked by bleakness, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and helped it become a breakout hit.
In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who found the show and supported its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about watching this charming family go about their everyday routines.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to evolve comedy past its prevailing layer of irony. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to bask in the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
